“Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things”. An interview series that celebrates and encourages women in their own career. This series is designed to offer a glimpse into the woman behind the product, the book, the business, the brand. We’ll be uncovering the unique processes and challenges they’ve had to overcome on their journey. Why? To empower others like you, to nurture and give space to your own ideas and dreams.
Behind every business or dream job, is a woman who simply had an idea, saw an opportunity and chose to pursue it. In the world of social media, where products and women we admire and love often have large followings, it’s important to remind ourselves that everybody was once an amateur. Experiencing the same fears, doubts and challenges that we all have from time to time.
I’m excited to introduce you to the lovely Julie Parker. CEO and founder of The Beautiful You Coaching Academy, and Editor in Chief of Inspired COACH Magazine. Julie is undoubtedly one of the most heartfelt and authentic women that I’ve had the pleasure to learn from. She is simply gorgeous, inside and out and an inspiration to many.
How did you business idea first come to light?
I had been loving working for myself as a life and business coach for many years, feeling very blessed to get to work with a lot of amazing people. As my business grew and became more successful I started to attract a lot of coaches who wanted business coaching to help them have the same sort of client flow and success I was enjoying. I absolutely loved working with them, but eventually the demand became too challenging to manage; with at one stage my assistant and I needing to wrestle a six month waiting list. It was a great ‘problem’ to have, but not an easy one to deal with.
I decided to see a wonderful and very experienced business coach myself and she asked me some incredibly illuminating questions to open up new ways of helping make my business more sustainable. And one of those questioning paths turned me on to the potential of creating a life coaching school where I could take all of the knowledge I had learned over 15 years of being a coach and teach it to more than person at a time.
At first it seemed a totally crazy and impossible idea. I couldn’t even believe I was considering doing it. However as soon as the idea was planted in my mind I could not stop thinking about it and took fingers to keyboard and started to write the curriculum. It just poured out of me and within days I was more inspired than I ever had been and the Beautiful You Coaching Academy was born.
That was nearly two years ago now and by the end of this year we will have trained over 200 coaches from all over the world, employ two full time staff and have four brilliant assistant trainers who are former graduates. Yes, I’m still pinching myself! Yes, I am the most amazingly blessed woman in the world!
What does a normal day look like for you?
There truly is no such thing as a normal or usual day in my business which is one of the reasons why I love it so much. I crave variety and running a business like the Academy really gives that to me.
One day may be heavily focused on teaching and training, another I may be out for most of it at a speaking engagement, being the MC for an event, or attending a networking function. Another day may be more routine and involve lots of desk related work such as looking at our finances, catching up on emails, working on inspired COACH Magazine and liaising and supporting our trainers and staff.
So there is a huge amount of variety which suits me perfectly.
What inspires you in your business? Why do you love doing what you do?
My biggest inspiration is undoubtedly our trainees. They are absolutely my biggest inspiration and my biggest teachers too.
I love doing what I do for endless reasons. The giving. Being of service. Helping people create more abundance in their life. Supporting people to become better communicators and catalysts for change. I could go on and on.
While it may sound cliché to some, I truly believe you would be hard pressed to find someone who has a more amazing job/business than I do! I love it THAT much. Maybe Oprah? She might just pip me for best job in the world!
What challenges, personally and professionally, have you had to overcome since starting your business?
I really had to overcome a lot of doubt and even negative thinking at the start of the journey around what I was doing and if it would be a success. There was a lot of ‘Who do you think you are?’ going on in my head and for awhile there I got very caught up in thinking that I would never be able to compete with the already very established corporate life coach schools that are out there.
It wasn’t until I realised that one of the main reasons I was starting the Beautiful You Coaching Academy and Life Coaching Course was because I knew there was not the heart-centred way of working with and coaching people out there that I knew really got results– that I left all of that thinking behind and just got on with the task at hand. I’m really glad I got over myself otherwise the whole thing may never have even started.
What have you learnt about yourself, your business, that you wish you had known at the start?
I have learned that even though we are based in Australia and sometimes feel like we are at the bottom of the world, that there was a market for the Beautiful You Life Coaching Course globally. Initially I just believed we would be Australian based and may need to field the odd enquiry from overseas.
I quickly learned though that there were a lot of people from all over the world – USA to UK to Guatemala to Singapore and beyond – that wanted to train to become a life coach using our model. This made me really have to step up into much bigger girl shoes than I ever first thought I could wear; something if I had known at the start may have made my fear about creating the academy even greater. It came quickly though and now I am loving training all our upcoming life coaches from around the world. It truly feels like a privilege that they have chosen us to become a life coach with.
